General Cleaning Tricks – A Work in Progress!

We got a dog! Isn’t she cute?

She’s also a hot little mess – half chihuahua, full attitude! I had to find something to clean up her “presents” while I trained her. I scoured the Net, of course, and came up with some terrific ideas.

The method I found is listed here, in this ever growing, ever changing list. I will post my favorite home tricks and tips to this blog as I discover them. Let’s start with that “doggie mess” idea:

1. Pour a cup of apple cider vinegar in a bowl with ten drops of lavender. Dip a cloth in the mixture and dab the area – don’t scrub. Lay a clean cloth over the dampened spot and press hard. This pulls the urine out of the carpet.

Cleaning the microwave:

1. Boil a bowl of water in the microwave. Messier microwaves will need longer steam applications. The mess wipes off with no scrubbing!

Cleaning the bathroom:

1. Mix Borax with water and lavender. Use a cup of water to a tablespoon of Borax, and approximately ten drops of lavender. The bathroom will smell amazing.

2. Use baking soda in the toilet. Mix 3/4 cup of baking soda with 3/4 cup white vinegar. Add five to ten drops of lavender. Remember, the baking soda and vinegar mixture will fizz, so this recipe cannot be made then stored. It needs to be made fresh every time. Mix everything in the bathroom, dump it in the toilet, then use a toilet brush to scrub the edges.

Windows and mirrors:

1. Skip the paper towels. Instead, search the eyeglass aisle at the drug store and find the no lint eyeglass cleaning cloths. They’re small, but they last for a long time. Spritz the glass lightly with cleaner, then wipe with the no lint cloth. This is the best glass cleaning method I have found to date.

There it is for now. What natural house cleaning remedies do you use? Share in the comments, and I’ll include it in the blog – with credit to you, of course!

UPDATE:

Vinegar mixed with water works really well on the windows. Pour 1/4 cup vinegar into the washing machine (with your homemade laundry soap of course) to get urine stains out of clothing. If your child wets the bed, it will take two or three washings to get the smell out but it will come out eventually. Dry the wash on the hottest setting possible for this to work best.

UPDATE:

Get a huge bag of baking soda. This deodorizes everything! Do you have seasonal allergies? The chemicals can really wreak havoc if you’re already sick. The baking soda is all natural and shouldn’t affect you. I’ve also found that vinegar takes the smell out of everything. I use it for dog accidents on the floor and the smell comes right out. Mix one part vinegar with six parts water. Also, add a quarter cup to the laundry to keep all the smells away naturally!

For my toilet I use a recipe of 2 cups baking soda, ¼ cup castile soap (Dr Bronner’s), and ¼ cup water mixed well. Last I add 2 tbsp vinegar and once it stops foaming I add about 30 drops of tea tree oil for it’s antibacterial properties. It takes on a pretty thick and foamy consistency (think Soft Scrub) but I can store it in an empty Dr Bronner’s container – as long as I use a bag to pipe it in! I tried the funnel once and made a clogged up, goopy mess!

For cleaning glass I spritz with club soda and wipe with a large lint-free microfiber cloth I found at the dollar store.
I also have a “Gleen” brand cloth that works well with only water but I don’t remember where I bought it.
