How to Stay Cool Inside the House While Saving Money

17 Jul

The summer of 2012 has  been the hottest on record for over 50 years. It’s so hot outside, all the cliches apply. A fun blog I reviewed found it was so hot outside, they were able to test the theory that an egg can be fried on pavement. Yeah, it’s that hot outside.

I’ve learned some tricks to keep the house cool while saving a couple bucks on the electric bill. I start by covering all the windows in the house with dark colored curtains to keep the sun out. I have some great thermal curtains that work in all seasons. They are insulated on one side and decorative on the other. Here they are, covering our glass back doors:

The left is the back of the curtain; the right is the front. It’s a decorative blue with white insulation on the back. These work miracles when extreme weather is trying to come through the window and door cracks.

Next, I turn on all the ceiling fans. These use less electricity than the air conditioners. I make sure all internal doors, such as bedrooms and bathrooms, are open so the air moves freely through the house.

After the ceiling fans are all on, I turn on only the air conditioners that have timers or temperature control. Here is a control panel for the air conditioner:

The number is the temperature. The machine turns off when the room reaches that temperature. There is also a sleep timer, a day timer and a fan option on this unit. Money is saved by regulating the amount of time the unit runs. Again, leave the doors open to all the rooms to move air through the house.

When we get home, our two story home is tolerable. The kids rest while I turn on the other AC unit, which is not thermostat regulated, and the standing fans. The rest of the house cools down quickly because the air has been moving all day. There is no “stale” feeling to the house.

If you are home all day, switching a floor fan/AC unit on and off as you move through rooms is always a great money saver.
