Why I Believe in Gays

27 Jun

Disclaimer: I’m not defending myself. I just think this is a very sweet story. And it’s all true.

When I was in junior college, I met a girl who had the most fascinating stories I’d ever heard. She had spent her senior year of high school in Argentina! Traveling is in my bones, so of course I hung out with her. We became  very close friends, and I wouldn’t have left her side for anything.

We went out together with a group of our friends one night, and the waiter was very friendly. With her permission, I left him her phone number. That was a disaster. They went out and had a terrible time. After the date, she called me on the phone and told me to sit down. Okay, so I sat down. She then spurted, “I’m bi.”

This was ground breaking for me. I didn’t know what to think. By this time, I loved her (in a friend way, but love is love.) I said, “No you’re not.” She said, “Yes, I am.” I laughed, I asked questions, and she obliged patiently. When the conversation was over, the friendship continued. She was in my wedding, she came to see my firstborn, and I was at her wedding!

Over time, she did drop the whole guy thing and just went with the females (she married a girl). I stayed straight, but I was never narrow again. I loved her before she was gay. (haha translated: before she came out). How could I turn away from her because she doesn’t date who I date??? Heck, in the female world, that should be ideal!

Love is lacking in the world. I could not take away the love I had for this person. She lives across the state right now and I miss her all the time. If I had let something silly, such as sexuality, separate us, I would live the rest of my life heartbroken. That would be ridiculous.

Consequently, the same situation happened to me again in senior college, and I’m still very close to her too! I couldn’t be happier, and my life is richer because of these women.
